History of Depression Infographic
The first SSRI, or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor is developed in 1988. A number of antidepressants are released in the following decades.
SSHIs function by boosting the amount of available chemical serotonin, which is used in the brain to deliver signals between neurons.
SSRIs are currently the first line of depression treatment due to their reduced side-effects and low toxicity compared to other antidepressants.
